WHAT IS SNUFF?

THE SMOKING SUBSTITUTE OF CHOICE FOR THE LORDS

When smoking was banned from the House of Commons in 1693 a Silver communal Snuff box was introduced containing a plentiful supply of the famous "English Rose" and is still used today.

Since the public smoking ban many smokers have turned to Snuff as a substitute and the un-anticipated results have led to many forgetting cigarettes all together.

Basically snuff is a blend of finely ground tobacco. It was discovered in the late 15th Century and its popularity heightened in the 18th Century when prominent users included Napoleon and Pope Benedict XIII. The popularity can also be assigned to the reported medicinal benefits ranging from migraines to syphilis and cancer. The medicinal effects where obviously exaggerated or unfounded but many still report relief from sinus issues.

With popularity came great wealth for those who produced successful blends and thus snuff blending developed into a highly skilled art form. Anybody can grind down a tobacco leaf but only a few know how to do it well and only the privileged few are taught the secrets. Literally thousands of blends have been produced over the centuries along with numerous blending techniques and styles. The recipes were such closely guarded secrets that it was standard for only two living people to know the recipes. Many of these blends have been lost over the years but the recipes that, are still in existence are still shrouded in strict secrecy so they cannot be copied. Snuff is one of the few forms of taking tobacco that has not succumbed to the modern world and the majority of English snuff blends are still made the traditional way. The Sharrow mills factory of Sheffield and Samuel Gawith's Kendal Brown house both use heavily seasoned oak and stone pestles dating back to the 1700's to grind their snuff, while the rest of the work is done by hand. Snuff just doesn't taste the same produced by 20th century Stainless steel machines. Bottled precious and rare oils, such as Sandlewood and Rose Oil are stored in safes along with the secret recipes, which the average man will never be privileged enough to view. These oils are carefully blended in a secret room into the wonderful scents we know today.

To produce snuff carefully selected, high grade tobacco leaves are sourced from all over the world and are carefully aged for over 2 years. The leaves go through at least two fermentation processes before being ground to specific grades and flavoured with natural scents providing varying experiences for the user.

You will see from our website we try to produce detailed descriptions to help our customers choose the product to suit us. However due the cloud of secrecy surrounding the recipes it is hard to produce accurate or detailed descriptions.

Please leave constructive reviews for others to follow and help build a database of snuff. If you believe any of our descriptions are un-helpful or need adjusting please tell us. You never know if you catch our attention enough there may be some more samples for you to try.

Snuff is generally categorised in three ways, Grind, Moisture and Flavour. Unfortunately for such an established tradition the gradings of snuff are very sparse. We have done our best to obtain specific gradings but it is no easy task. We are hoping to build up some reviews from snuff takers worldwide and in time have a full record. For the time being our snuffs are graded where possible.

Grind

Snuff can be ground to three grades, Fine, Medium and Course. A fine Snuff gives an intense sensation not suitable for the beginner, where as a Coarse ground snuff is much easier going and is more accommodating for the average user.

Moisture

In the same was as the grind, snuff can be Moist, Medium or Dry. A dry snuff gives a more intense sensation, which grades through to the Moist, which is much more easy going.

Flavour

THE EXCITING PART. There are literally hundreds of snuff flavours available all providing entirely different sensations. Once you've narrowed down the grind and moisture that suits, you can begin experimenting. We do not and could not possibly stock every flavour that, the snuff manufacturers produce as specialist companies such as Wilsons of Sharrow and Samuel Gawiths literally produce 100's of Snuff flavours.

We have listed the main flavours further down this page. If there are any particular flavours that take your fancy please feel free to drop us a line and we shall see if we can obtain some one off samples for you to try. Then if you like it we shall gladly stock it in permanently for you.

HOW DO YOU TAKE SNUFF?

Taking a pinch of snuff "insufflating" is a tradition that in the modern day is generally considered a simple act but interestingly over the years there were many methods, which varied as fashions change. We are not going to delve into it here but there are articles on the web on this topic, which you may find of interest once you have become accustomed to enjoying snuff.

On your first attempt you may get it right with instant satisfaction but more likely you will wince and have the over whelming urge to sneeze. Don't worry this is normal for a first attempt and the intensity will soften after a few attempts.

Tap the Snuff box/tin to loosen
Open the Snuff box/tin
Tap the tub to accumulate the snuff with the middle and forefinger.
Scoop a pinch
Put the Snuff to your nose.
The debate: Traditionally you would now intake from both nostrils to take an even helping for each nostril. However it is more common in present times to intake from one nostril.

DO NOT INHALE THE SNUFF. The snuff should be sniffed into the nose, not taken into the throat or sinuses.

If it is your first time Sneeze gracefully

Leave it 10 minutes and repeat as the heart desires have another go.

HOW DO YOU STORE SNUFF?

Skilled blenders put a lot of effort into producing the perfect blends, grades and moisture levels for your enjoyment, it would be rude to let it dry out.

Firstly the shelf life of snuff is roughly 3 months in a cool dark place in its sealed tin with the exception vacuum sealed tins, which can last up to a year without altering. Most snuffs should be okay for over a year but it will not be to the same standard as it was when you bought it.

Once you have opened the snuff it will be noticeably different after a couple of days. It will still be use-able but again will not be as it was when you bought it.

For transporting, the snuff should be kept in a tightly sealed tin/snuff box. Snuffs are increasingly being packaged in plastic dispenser tubs, which make tapping the snuff onto the hand easier and will more than suffice in storing/transporting your snuff. However if you want to add to the ritual of taking snuff and practice the tradition of tapping and passing or just want to add a talking point in any bar you will no doubt want a decorative snuff box.

Ornamental Snuff Boxes

Ornamental Snuff Boxes are rare and becoming increasingly rare. There is a very limited choice in the modern market and no sign of anything new despite the strong demand. The price of vintage boxes has soared meaning many boxes are worth £100's. This also means there are a lot of Chinese copies and inferior offerings. No matter what material the box is made of there should be no noticeable smell that would taint your snuff. Then there must be a very tight seal. Generally there is no rubber seal as these perish but there must be a very clean and positive seal between the lid and the box. Also pay attention to the hinge if there is one. If it hasn’t been crafted well the snuff will seep out into your pockets and the snuff will dry out very easily, or even get damp if it is a particularly dry snuff.

This makes it very difficult for us tobacconists to advise on suitable blends to suit our customers specific requirements and of course makes it hard for our customers to choose.

As the name suggests Sharrow Menthol Snuffs are flavoured with Menthol Crystals for an invigorating sensation. Mentholated snuffs account for well over half of Snuff sales.
